The Welsh language

Welsh is a Celtic language that is spoken by the population of Wales. It is not the same as the Cymric dialects, for those are the Welsh dialects of the English language.

The word Wales is derived from the Romano-British word ‘Walha’, which means stranger. Welsh adopted the alphabet in the 9th century and literary texts exist since the 11th century, among which the Mabinogion.

The Welsh language was spoken by 20,5% of the Welsh population in 2001, 2% more than ten years before.

The grammar of Welsh seems at first sight very illogical, but it is consequent like the pronunciation.
